frequently asked Questions
Can you explain to me what levels of
retirement housing are available?
In recent years more housing services have become available for seniors in Nova Scotia. These services are being listed under a variety of names; we’ll try to provide some brief definitions.
Assisted Living –
Like The Ridgewood, provides a higher level of
services and personal care than independent/enhanced living. Services include meals, housekeeping, laundry
services and personal care assistance. Can also include recreational and
exercise activities. These facilities are privately operated with a private pay
program.
Independent/Enhanced Living – Usually self contained apartments or 1-2 bedroom semi-detached housing units or apartments. Some services are provided on a user pay system. The tenant is usually responsible for their personal care needs. These facilities are privately operated with a private pay program.
Nursing Homes - Provides housing under the Provincial Government’s Continuing Care Program. This program includes Community Based Options, Residential Care Facilities, Nursing Homes and Homes for the Aged. These programs are usually provided to seniors requiring nursing or substantial personal care. The facilities are funded by the Provincial Government. What you pay is determined by your income. www.gov.ns.ca/health/programs
